Local band Purpose donated their performance and all tips collected during Zandra’s Taqueria’s first annual Day of the Dead event
Zandra’s Taqueria in Old Town Manassas had a packed house for its first Day of the Dead fundraiser. Focusing on several themes of the holiday—bringing people together, feasting, music and service—Zandra’s partnered with Purpose and Friends of SERVE to invite community members to join in raising food and funds for Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS), the largest private, nonprofit human service organization in Northern Virginia.
“We are pleased with how well the community responded,” said Miguel Pires, owner of Zandra’s. “Not only were we successful in collecting food and money for the work that NVFS and SERVE do for families going through challenging times, a lot of interest was generated in the charities as well.”
The event raised $580; $455 of that came from Zandra’s donating $1 for each margarita purchased that night. Additionally, the restaurant collected 90 pounds of food. Zandra’s encouraged patrons to donate by providing a voucher for a free gourmet taco to each patron who participated in the food drive.
Adding to the festive atmosphere was live music by Purpose. The band waived its fee to play that evening, and donated all tips collected to NVFS.
